Gallery label
Borromini, together with his almost exact contemporary and bitter rival Bernini, dominated the architecture of The Roman Baroque. This is a preliminary sketch for the plan of part of a monastery next to the Chiesa Nuova, in Rome. It shows the north end of the church with the side entrance and lobby of the monastery. On the left of this is the porter's room and visitors' rooms. All the notes are in Borromini's hand, and show something of the working methods of Roman architects at this date.
