De Wint specialised in watercolours. His oil paintings were little known until after his death. He did not sign or date his pictures. His work presents a highly idealised image of the English landscape in the face of rapid industrialisation. The critic John Ruskin wrote, 'De Wint makes me feel as if I were walking in the fields'.
