Object history note

'Professor Legros' could be a reference to French artist Alphonse Legros, who became an etching teacher at the South Kensington School of Art (now known at the Royal College of Art) and then the Slade Professor at University College London in 1876. Sir Charles Holroyd moved to London in 1880 to study under Legros at the Slade. After receiving a travelling scholarship and spending two years in Rome, Legros invited Holroyd back to the Slade to become an assistant-master. This could be the origin of the etching, with Legros also etching a portrait of Holroyd. Holroyd later became the first Keeper of the Tate Gallery and a director at the National Gallery.
