Object history
Poynter was invited to tender for the decoration of the V&A Grill Room in November 1865. Judging from the nineteenth Report of the Science and Art Department, the Grill Room's large tile panels, derived from designs including this study, were all installed by the end of 1871. Poynter's highly finished, coloured design for 'July' (Museum object number 7916:7), apparently derived from the present study, bears his monogram signature with the date 1870. The dating of the present study to 1871 at the time of acquisition, collectively with object numbers E.5272-1919 to E.5284-1919, is therefore inaccurate (see 1919 V&A Accession Register).
