Object history note

Poynter was invited to tender for the decoration of the V&A Grill Room in November 1865. Judging from the nineteenth Report of the Science and Art Department, the Grill Room's large tile panels, derived from designs including these studies, were all installed by the end of 1871. A note on this particular sheet of studies gives the date 'Aug. 28./71', but the context in which it was written is unclear. At the time of acquisition, object numbers E.5272-1919 to E.5284-1919, which includes the present studies, were collectively dated to 1871 (see 1919 V&A Accession Register). Although this dating is not necessarily always accurate, Poynter's highly finished, coloured design for 'September' (Museum object number 7916:9), apparently derived from the present studies, bears his monogram signature with the date 1871.
