Object history
Poynter was invited to tender for the decoration of the V&A Grill Room in November 1865. Judging from the nineteenth Report of the Science and Art Department, the Grill Room's large tile panels, derived from designs including this one, were all installed by the end of 1871. At the time of acquisition, object numbers E.5272-1919 to E.5284-1919, which includes this design, were collectively dated to 1871 (see 1919 V&A Accession Register). However, this dating is not necessarily always accurate. For Poynter’s highly finished, coloured design for ‘Summer’, apparently derived from the present study, see Museum object number 7917:2.
