This work is signed along the right edge 'E. Betts-Brown'. It has an exhibition label on the reverse that reads 'British Empire Society of Arts/(Study of head of old man)/ Head of Old Man No. 4. Price 5.5s. Mrs E M Bursey, 85 Woodlands Golders Green, NW 11'. Mrs Bursey signed her works variously as E. M. Bursey, E. M. Boese (the original French name of her husband, who was naturalised and anglicised the name) and as E. Betts-Brown (her maiden name). She trained in Paris under Madame Debillemont-Chardon, author ofLa Miniature sur Ivoire. She exhibited at the Paris Salon for six years. The V&A holds six miniatures by her.

This was exhibited at the British Empire society of Arts. Exhibition label on reverse lettered "British Empire Society of Arts / (Study of head of old man) Head of Old Man No. 4 Price £5.5s. Mrs E M Bursey, 85 Woodlands Golders Green, NW11".

Mrs Edith Marian Bursey (1876-1946) signed variously as 'E.M. Bursey', 'E M Boesé' (the original French name of her husband who was naturalised and who anglicised the name), and as 'Betts-Brown' (her maiden name). E.M. Bursey trained in Paris under Madame Debittemont-Chardon (author of La Miniature sur Ivoire). Exhibited at the Salon for 6 years. [see also E.42-43-1989 and E.46-47-1989].
