Mary and Patrick were the two younger children of Captain Patrick Stirling (1782-1816) of Kippendavie and Kippenross, Scotland. Mary married John Davie Morries MD in 1840 and died on 28 April 1893. Her husband took the name Morries-Stirling, so she became Mrs Morries-Stirling. Her brother Patrick was born on 10 August 1813 and died on 10 March 1839 as the result of a fall. The miniature was painted in March 1826. It is signed on the back by Rochard of '281 Regent Street' in London. The picture has an inscription on the back by Patrick's mother, Catherine Georgiana. It dates from 1841, two years after his death. It reads, 'I bequeath this picture to my dear John [her eldest son] - with the request that it may remain at Kippenross where Patrick was so much beloved. C. G. Stirling, October 1841'.
