Bibliographic reference | The following excerpt is taken from Hind, Arthur Mayger, Howard Coppuck Levis, and Joseph Pennell. A History of Engraving & Etching, from the 15th Century to the Year 1914; Being the Third and Fully Revised Edition of A Short History of Engraving and Etching. London: Constable, 1923:
'As Director of the engraving class at South Kensington, Frank Short represents a distinct tendency from that initiated at the Slade School by Legros. In the certainty of his technique he is perhaps unequalled, and he gives far more encouragement to the calmer study of processes, to the scientific calculations of strength and character of bitings and the like, than ever did Legros, who might retort that any recurrence of technical failure is nothing to the possible loss of freshness and spontaneity. It may be mentioned too that one of the disputed tenets of his school is the practice of steel facing the plate, which he declares makes no appreciable difference to the quality of his impression.' |
