Portrait of a boy, head and shoulders, turned to left and looking to front; the sitter is wearing a coat with gold brocade and a neckcloth tied in a bow. Features softly hatched in dark grey with blue shadow, with touches of red for the lips, white for the eyes and touches of black for the pupil and iris, and a white highlight, on a pale pinkish carnation ground; hair in pale brown wash, lined and hatched in black with ochre and pale grey for the lights; cravat in pale brown wash, shaded with blue-grey and with the lights in thick white; coat in pale grey wash modelled in blue, the gold decoration in ochre and brown; background a solid blue wash; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: Seventeenth-century gold locket, the back flat, though curved from top to bottom with straight sides flaring out, and chased with a running scallop ornament just below the bezel, into which the bevelled edges of the flat glass is set; on the back, two loops of flat section, each tapering from the centre to twin scrolls by which the loops are soldered to the back, and labelled: Charles II.
