Portrait of a man, head and shoulders, turned to left and looking over his left shoulder to the front; the sitter is wearing a neckcloth, tied in a bow, and armour. Features firmly hatched in dark brown and sanguine, with some stippled blue shading especially about the eyes; the eyes dark brown with thick white and with white highlights; on a pale carnation ground; hair in pale brown wash modelled in black and grey; armour in grey and black washes with some modelling in brown and with the lights in white shaded with blue and the studs in gold; background a solid brown wash to the right, lightening to a grey wash to the left, vertically hatched in brown; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: Seventeenth-century oval gold locket, convex back, the sides channelled and rising to the bezel, which holds the flat glass by its bevelled edge; the hanger of D-section channelled down the middle, soldered to the top of the locket and with coarsely engraved scroll ornament radiating from it down the back.

Object history
Provenance: Acquired apparently by Alan Evans from an unrecorded source for his personal collection and not lent to the Museum; bequeathed with the rest of the Wallop/Evans Collection to the National Gallery in 1974; placed on indeterminate loan at the V&A.
Production
It is possible, judging by the pose of the sitter, that this is a self portrait of the artist.
