Physical description

Portrait of a woman, half-length, resting head on right hand, turned slightly to front and looking to left. Features in soft, distinct stipples of brown and sanguine with some pale grey shading; black and white highlights in the eyes; hair in pale brown wash, lined with darker colour and with some pale gouache lights; all on a pale creamy carnation ground; chemise in white over pale brown; dress worked in browns with pale grey lights; background a brown wash, cross-hatched with darker lines and some pale gouache; on vellum put down on a leaf from a table-book.

Frame: Nineteenth- or early twentieth-century silver locket, the convex back soldered to sides with a deep outer channel, stepping inward with a narrow channel to the bezel, which holds the shallowly convex glass by its rounded and polished edges; the hanger of square section wire with a central groove, bifurcating at the back into twin diminishing spirals of seven-and-a-halfturns.
