Lady Henrietta Frances Spencer was married to Frederick Ponsonby in November 1780. The portrait may have been commissioned at about that time. The V&A holds a miniature of Frederick Ponsonby, 3rd Earl of Bessborough (P.44-1910), which is a pair to this one. It is also by Richard Cosway.
