Frederick Ponsonby married Lady Henrietta Frances Spencer in November 1780. The portrait may have been commissioned at about that time. The V&A holds a miniature of Henrietta Frances, Countess of Bessborough (P.45-1910), which forms a pair with this one. It is also by Richard Cosway.
