Finely modelled representation of the Buddha, who gazes downwards, and is seated in the bhumisparsa-padmasana mudra (earth-touching or witness gesture seated in the lotus position) on a low pedestal encircled with scrolling lotus and foliate patterns, His left hand rests upturned on his lap. Depicted in monastic robes which leaves his right shoulder bare. It falls in folds down the front and has raised beaded decoration on the edges. His curly hair, decorated with a narrow band, rises to an unisha (top knot).

Object history | This figure is believed to have been acquired by Colonel Pollard (the donor's husband) while serving in BUrma in the late 19th century. Nos. IM 49 to 65-1912 (a collection of Burmese figures representing Gautum Buddha) purchased for £20 from Mrs M M Pollard. Purchased from Mrs M M Pollard, 28 Longridge Road, Earl's Court, SW. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project. RP 1912-2542M |
