Marks and inscriptions
  • The inscription refers to the Mamluk Sultan, al-Nasir Hasan, who ruled 1347-51 and again in 1354-61. (On the medallions on the neck, and on the main body.)
  • Inscribed in Arabic with Quranic suras 24 and 35 (Inscribed on the neck of the lamp, thuluth script.)
Gallery label
Made for a building of al-Nasir Hasan, Mamluk Sultan of Egypt, (1347-1361). The foot is a modern replacement attached by a metal band after the original was broken. It is the wrong shape, and should flare outwards.
