Object history
The drawing was made by the architectural artist Francis Arundale while acting as draughtsman for Robert Hay, the younger son of Sottish nobility, who was in the process of documenting ancient Egyptian sites. Arundale joined Hay in Egypt and worked for him during the years 1824 to 1834. One of the drawings he produced in this time was the section and plan of the tomb of Ramesses III. Despite a vague later inscription, “Plan and interior of one of the Tombs of one of the Kings”, the subject of the drawing has been identified through its distinctive form and decoration.

The drawing was sold to the V&A in 1877 by the dealer Robert Jackson.
