The Lake of Lucerne: Mont Pilatus in the Distance

Oil Painting
1857 (painted)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Mount Pilatus is to the east of Lake Lucerne. The white ground, beneath the paint, gives this picture a brilliance of light and colour that is more usually found in a watercolour. Inchbold's visits to Switzerland between 1856 and 1859 were subsidised by the writer John Ruskin, who nevertheless severely criticised his work.
