Physical description

Design for a silver soup tureen on stand, Profile, less than full size. The finial is formed as group of a lobster resting on vegetables. Acanthus leaves on the base of the body. A band of laurel leaves on the body and scrolled handles. The base with dolphin handles and scrolled feet.

Object history note

This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver.
This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings.
At the bottom is a foot scale in pencil showing that the tureen is 300 high and 340 wide.
