Object history
This design contains decorative elements classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for wine coolers of similar shape and dimensions. This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings. The mask and greek key ornament on the cooler are very similar to those on the centre piece 8437.10.
This design contains elements used on a number of wine coolers, all of the same basic shape (see also 8390.16 and 8390.17). The frieze and handles are found on a set of four silver wine coolers at Woburn Abbey, London 1805- 1806. The sphinx base of wings sphinxes appears on a silver wine cooler marked by Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith, London 1805- 1806 and in ormolu (possibly by Rundell and Bridge).
