Object history
This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver. This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings. This design is closely related to the tureen of the Grand Service in the Royal Collection marked by Paul Storr, London 1803-4 which has the same cover and finial and stand with lions’ feet and a beaded plinth. (Fig 9. ) Very similar finial and waterleaves decoration appear on 8525.2.
