Object history
A modified version of this design was marked by John Scofield, London 1798-9 (Connoisseur Magazine, Vol 195 Number 783, May 1977, page 27, Asprey & Co) and also another variant is a candlestick by John Green & Co, Sheffield, 1799 (Sothebys 2 November 1988, lot 798).
This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver. This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings.
