Object history | This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver.
This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings.
The sections on the side of the body are inscribed “Hollow”, “Hollow”, “Roundig”, “Rounding” suggesting that two versions of the shaping of the body are being proposed. This design may be derived from a French Rococo tureen for instance from one by Pierre Germain, Shown in Element of Oevreferie, Paris 1728 (Hartop 2015, fig. 92). Tureens after French rococo models in the style of Pierre Germain were been made for Rundell and Bridge by 1812. For a sketch drawn and inscribed by the same hand on the same type of bluish paper see D2207-1885. |
