Object history | This design contains decorative elements of classical inspiration that Jean Jacques Boileau often combines in designs for silver. This and the other drawings by J. J. Boileau and his school were probably in the collection of A. C. Pugin and sold at Mr Wheatley’s rooms,4th June 1843, lot 469, Boileau’s (J.) “Series of drawings appropriated to the gold and silversmiths”, bought by Williams for 3 shillings. The presence of sketched text in the central medallion indicated that is a presentation cup. A cup with a similar cover of military theme is marked by Paul Storr 1799 to 1800 retailed by Green and Ward (Sothebys 21 June 1973, lot 188). |
