This work depicts a scene from Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night. Viola, dressed as a man, encounters Olivia, accompanied by Maria. Hamilton painted it as one of 23 works for Josiah Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery in London's Pall Mall. It was displayed from 1789 to 1805 and also published as an engraving.
