The subject, a bloodhound waiting at a door as if ready to spring, is purposefully unclear, but discarded armour and a knight's plume suggest an absent master. The picture was much admired, though one critic objected to 'the absurd air of sentimentality which Mr. Landseer so uniformly gives to these canine creatures'.
