Place of origin

Gisèle Freund (1908 - 2000) was a Jewish German-born photographer who fled Nazi Germany, arriving in Paris in 1933. Adrienne Monnier, who ran the famed bookshop, La Maison des Amis des Livres, took her under her wing and introduced her to Paris’s literary figures. Monnier was the long-time partner of Sylvia Beach who ran the equally renowned Shakespeare & Company English language bookshop nearby. After a time Freund replaced Beach as Monnier's partner but the three remained close friends. As the Nazis came to occupy Paris, Freund managed to escape to Argentina and in 1947 became the first woman to sign a contract with Magnum Photos.
