LITERATURE Gere, Zuccaro, p. 54, n. 1; the same, ‘Early drawings by Pirro Ligorio’ in Master Drawings, 9, 1971, pp. 244 and 249, pl. 17a.
Formerly ascribed to Polidoro Caldara. Pouncey suggested Ligorio many years ago. Gere endorses the attribution and includes the drawings in a group of drawings made during Ligorio's Roman phase (about 1534-69), when he was under the influence of Polidoro, to whom many of these early drawings were subsequently ascribed, like ours. The facial types, as Gere states, are characteristic of Ligorio, particularly in the case of the little acolyte on the left. |
