The central medallion ia a portrait of Sir William Hooker (1785 -1865), Director of Kew Gardens, and is formed of fourteen pieces of Jasper ware. The original memorial monument, of which these pieces are duplicates, was commissioned from the Wegdwood company by Sir William's son, Sir joseph Hooker (1817-1911) in 1865. The design is by Sir Joseph's cousin, Reginald Palgrave. The monument was erected in the Parish Church at Kew in 1867.(1998)
