Clementina in fancy dress (peasant outfit) stands barefoot on a chair holding a winnowing sieve; Lord Hawarden and Florence Elizabeth (also in a peasant outfit and barefoot) stand next to her supporting a sack of straw. A wheelbarrow and various tools are positioned beside them.

Historical context
Lady Hawarden took many photographs of fancy tableaux of 'peasant life'. This was a popular theme in mid nineteenth-century art, particularly in the paintings of e.g. Millet, in which farm work is endowed with spiritual qualities. Parallels might also be drawn with the work of the photographer Henry Peach Robinson, who created images of idealised peasant life. Lady Hawarden's images differ from these in that she does not attempt to disguise the identities of her models.
