With the founding of Punch in 1841, Leech gradually established himself as the foremost artist of early Victorian pictorial satire in its pages. In this cartoon he trades on the stereotypes of his time. He caricatures the politician Disraeli as a Jewish tailor, measuring the British Lion, (further caricatured and dressed as an Irish peasant) for a suit.
