Place of origin

Very few of Lewis's rough sketches survive, but this is one of a group of drawings bequeathed to the Museum by his widow [D.1164-1908 to D.1198-1908]. They often contain his first ideas for paintings, and so they are either composition sketches, or details sketched for inclusion in the finished works.

Object history
Bequeathed in 1908 by Mrs J. F. Lewis, [Marian Lewis, née Harper] via her executors and H. H. Finch. This is one of a group of rough sketches, now with museum numbers D.1164-1908 to D.1198-1908. They had been in her husband's studio until his death in 1876, either because they did not sell, or were not put into the Artist's sale in 1855. She did not subsequently include them in the studio sale of 1877.
