This print by Emma Stibbon, entitled Carrara, depicts the cavernous spaces of the marble quarries of Carrara, in northern Italy. The famous white Carrara marble is quarried in the nearby Alpi Apuane. This image shows those quarries. Small human figures contrast with the vast uneven rock surfaces, alive with darkness and light. This image communicates the epic physical space of this shadowy landscape.
Stibbon is inspired by panoramic views such as this. First she produces large-scale detailed drawings on the spot, and later transfers the images onto large sheets of plywood, chisels the design out of the surface and then prints it onto paper.

Gallery label | This woodcut depicts the cavernous marble quarries in Carrara, Italy. On the one hand it is a reference to the dramatic landscape subjects – cliffs, mountains, ravines – favoured by 18th-century artists responding to notions of the Sublime. But Stibbon is also using the image of quarrying as a metaphor for the physical effort involved in cutting the woodblocks needed to make this vast print.
