Gustave Doré was a largely self-taught artist who had illustrated the Bible in 1866. He painted the picture on which this print is based in1870, for the Doré Gallery, a permanent exhibition of his work which ran in London from 1868 until 1892. The Doré Gallery was visited by two and a half million visitors in this period. The British Evangelist Charles Surgeon considered the pictures “the greatest collection of religious paintings in the World”. The gallery attracted religious pilgrimages and ministers who preached sermons on the paintings.
