This neck ring was described as from North Africa when it was acquired by the museum in 1904. Plain torques made from a band of silver like this are not common in North Africa, and nor is the spiral decoration. It is possible that it was made elsewhere.

Brief description
Silver flat band necklace with hook and loop clasp of thick wire ending in a spiral, unknown origin, 1850-1899.
Physical description
Torque necklace made from a band of sheet silver. Each end has been converted to a strip of thick wire which is bent round to form a hook at one end, and a corresponding loop at the other, before finishing as a decorative applied spiral on each end of the band.

Accessions register entry: 'Neck-ring ("Towk") of pure silver. / Formed of a plain hammered strip tapered at each end to a wire which, coiled on itself, forms a loop or a hook. A coil of wire is applied to each end of the strip. / North African / Diam. 4 3/4 in., W. 3/8 in. to 9/16 in.'
