Earring

Earring
1850-1880 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The shape of this earring is based on an Indian design, also familiar from Paisley shawls, which was widely used throughout the Ottoman Empire. It is made of copper, double plated first with silver and then with gold, so that it would look and wear like silver-gilt. This was a common technique in the Balkans in the 18th and 19th centuries, when much of the population was desperately poor.
