Physical description

Double page portrait format engraving in black and white, showing objects and ornamentation from the burial chamber of the freedmen and slaves of the family of Augustus. The images are lettered A-D, with a key in Italian at the bottom of the page. A: Ledge that ran around the wall of the room; B: One of the sepulchral niches, and a cinerary urn; C: One of the inscriptions placed above the niches; D: Ornamentation of the door jamb.

Object history note

This print was originally published in Francesco Bianchini's 'Camere ed Inscrizioni Sepulchrali', Rome: GM Salvioni, 1727. Piranesi purchased the copper plate and reprinted the illustration in his 'Antichita Romane'.
