British, 1831
Pencil, pen and ink and watercolour

The 1820s and 30s saw the start of modern
company legislation. This especially affected
banks and insurance companies. Secure
in their new legal framework these
companies began to look for suitable office
accommodation. These were almost always
classicla, and soon began to grow upwards
to provide more accommodation. Cockerell
was one of the most eminent of the younger
neo-classical architects and so was ideally
placed to accept these commissions. In 1833
he replaced the ageing Soane as architect
to the bank of England and designed an
influential series of branches in the major
cities.
