  • (date?) Note in Register: Note by Mr A [Albert] van de Put [authority on Orders writing in the 1920s] regarding De la Pole impaling France and England quarterly, within the Garter. John de la Pole, 2nd Duke of Suffolk, K.G. in 1472, died 1491 = Elizabeth (Plantagenet) sister of Edward IV before 1460: she was living in 1502-3. "She had robes for the order of the Garter prepared for her in 1477 (G.E.C. Complete Peerage). Had the shield been an ordinary shape I should have preferred to describe the arms as hers, but the shape employed makes it rather difficult to insist on this. As it is, the formula had better be 'Arms of John de la Pole...impaling those of his wife, Elizabeth, sister of Edward IV".
