Design for 'Building' mosaic

Design
ca. 1876 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Drawing in charcoal on paper, with fixative (probably gum arabic) applied on top. This design is a preparatory, full-length figure study. It shows a bearded man wearing a flat cap who stands facing to the left. He carries a long, rectangular plank over one shoulder. In his other hand he carries a basket filled with various objects, probably building materials and/or tools. Creasing, and pinholes in upper corners. Foxing, staining, and fingerprints. Some deterioration of charcoal. Marbled effect possibly caused by dispersal of charcoal in fixative. Craquelure, pooling, and dripping of fixative. Conservation mounting underneath paper.
