Bowl

mid 18th century (made), ca. 1755-60 (decorated)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Bowl partly over-painted with flowers and leaves in enamel colours; with a low footrim and almost vertical sides, curving out to a vertical-walled recess intended to hold the cover (missing). The bowl is decorated with a flowing design of peony, chrysanthemum and other flowers in white on white. Overlying this in places is an enamelled decoration of leaves and flowers in colours, a spray consisting of a purple rose, a yellow hearts-ease, two blue and two drab purple bell-shaped flowers with their leaves, followed by individual sprigs of hearts-ease and yellow roses and a purple tulip, accompanied by a multicoloured butterfly and two 'cherries' without stalks. In the centre is a large yellow rose - mostly these flowers are outlined in purplish-black. The rim is edged with a chocolate-brown line.
