Object history
This drawing was the basis for a print included in 'Cartoons for the Cause 1886-1896' produced for the International Socialist Workers and Trade Union Congress, 1896. Alongside an illustrated title-page were 12 cartoons by Crane for various socialist publications, including Commonweal (1885-1894, co-edited by William Morris), Justice (the weekly newspaper of the Social Democratic Federation from 1884-1933) and The Clarion (edited by prominent socialist campaigner Robert Blatchford from 1891-1934).
'Cartoons for the Cause 1886-1896' also included verses by Crane to accompany illustrations memorialising The Paris Commune such as this, May Day celebrations, and Christmas themes.
