Printing Plate

1623 (designed)
Artist/Maker

The curved edge of the plate identifies this as an electrotype. Electrotyping involves ‘growing’ a copper layer over a mould taken from an original plate or block by placing it into a solution of copper sulphate and passing an electric current through it. Electrotyping enabled the original to be preserved for longer so that more prints could be taken over its lifetime.
