Caps like this, made from two half-moon shapes sewn together, were generally known as 'dopalri' (two scales), and the small, delicate versions like this one were called 'nukkadar' (pointed). These caps were introduced in the early 19th Century. The 'dopalri' became an informal hat worn without the turban.
