Upper section of a lion-shaped incense burner. It has a stumpy nose lengthened by diverging raised fillets that loop around the ears. The lips are disproportionately large.
The pierced foliate scrollwork on the sides is somewhat disconnected.
Patina: Green sulphurous deposits, leaving extensive red oxide patches to show through. The olive yellow hue of the crude alloy is visible in places.

| Object history | Purchased from Mr Said Motammed, 1st November 1966 (Frankfurt). Historical significance: A number of feline-shaped incense burners are now known, however none compare with this piece in shape or decoration. The unusual facial features of the feline and the disconnected nature of the scrollwork pattern raises doubts concerning its authenticity, Melikian-Chirvani (1982). |
