Footed Bowl (jam)

Footed Bowl
1200-1250 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The bowl with rounded walls curving very slightly inwards and resting on a narrow, low foot with incurving sides.

A continuous epigraphic frieze runs around the rim. Below this the engraved and silver-inlaid decoration consists 18 wide arches which rest on rossttes. The space within each arch is filled with six tangent discs and a downward-pointing lotus bud. Matching motifs of just two discs and one lotus bud are engraved and inlaid in the narrower intervals sparating the rossttes at the bottom. Above, in the spandrels between the srches there are looped knots and above each arch trangualr motifs with incurving sides. An epigraphic band encircles the underside of the bowl and is separated from the foot by a narrow undecorated border. Another epigraphic band, framed by two incised fillets, encircles the foot.
