Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This large dish, probably used as a tray or salver, possibly for serving wine, is decorated with a figure of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, framed with a border of grape bunches and vines. The shape ultimately derives from a metalware prototype evidenced by the gadrooned or fluted rim, and the decoration may have been engraved on the surface of the dish. Equally, it may have been more directly based on a Dutch Delft model.
