18th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This scroll painting or tangka depicts the Buddha Amitayus (phonetic Tibetan: Tsepagme; transliterated Tibetan: Ts'e dpag med), the Buddha of Infinite Life. He is surrounded by many other representations of himself. Amitayus is central to the Long Life Ceremony, which aims at prolonging human life. The tangka may have been commissioned for such a ceremony. This is a ‘gold’ tangka, or Sertang in Tibetan (transliterated Tibetan: gSer t'ang). The name derives from the technique of drawing directly on to a gold background or, as here, drawing in gold on to a red background.
