Jug

ca. 1730-1740 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Drug jar (albarello) of gently waisted, cylindrical form with narrow angled shoulder and short, wide-spreading mouth; with low foot ring and well-glazed base, the mouth-rim brown glazed. Decoration is in early famille rose enamels with a rich tomato-red, strong green, thick egg-yellow, bright blue and touches of pink. On either side is a device resembling a heart topped by an eye and with a pendant below, framed in cord work below a Cardinal's hat: possibly the badge of a monastic pharmacy; between tall sprays of red flowers with butterflies and a tendril border below a cell-diaper bordered shoulder, a band with florets and scroll round the neck. The form and decoration copy Spanish or Italian faience.
The device on the side of the jug suggests that this piece was part of a requisition for a convent or religious nursing order in Spain or Italy.
