Horace Walpole devoted much of his life to transforming Strawberry Hill, the Twickenham estate he acquired in 1747. Over the next fifty years the house was greatly enlarged, the grounds grew nine-fold and many small garden buildings were introduced. Walpole had a keen interest in garden design and insisted that his garden be full of colour and incident to form a definite contrast to the dark Gothic exterior of the house. He commissioned this watercolour as a record of his work.(2005)
